COLONIA ULPIA TRAIANA RATIARIA
archaeological field school 2012

Ratiaria field school 2012 is organized by Bulgarian Archaeological Association with the financial support of Association "Ratiaria". We're seeking for volunteers to join our research project of excavation and preservation of the biggest archaeological site in North Bulgaria - Colonia Ulpia Traiana Ratiaria. This amazing city was forgotten by the scientists for more than 20 years. However, from Ratiaria and its area are known more than 100 inscriptions, under the ground still lie the remains of huge buildings and the amount of the archaeological finds is enormous. The participants in our project will have chance to discover the "lost city", to be part of the "new birth" of Ratiaria and to touch material evidences with great importance for the Roman Archaeology. And most important - the voluntary work of our students will help to safe one archaeological site in danger. That's should be the main lesson to learn for all archaeologists - how to work and ensure preservation of the world cultural heritage.

Association "Ratiaria"

In August 2011 a non-profit association - "Ratiaria" was founded in the village of Archar. The main goal of the organization is to rescue and promote the ancient city of Colonia Ulpia Traiana Ratiaria. As is known, Ratiaria is one of the most savagely damaged archaeological sites in Bulgaria and in the last 20 years it is the major center of criminal activity related to trafficking of Antiquities in Western Europe and United States. The reason for this catastrophe is the systematic violation of the Cultural Heritage Low by the responsible institutions - local authorities and Regional History Museum - Vidin. Association "Ratiaria" is a citizens' initiative, which was established as a corrective to the government and insisted on implementing the Law on Cultural Heritage in respect of Ratiaria and whole Vidin area.
